Kerkstraat 1, Oude-Tonge

Louis David Cohen was the son of Meijer Marcus Cohen, butcher, and Sophia Rosenberg. Louis David Cohen was a butcher himself. He was not married and lived at 1 Kerkstraat in Oude-Tonge. Louis David Cohen died in concentration camp Vught on January 27, 1943.

Meijer Marcus Cohen, b. 12.05.1886 in Valburg, married on 10.07.1916 in Zevenaar to Sophia Rosenberg, b. 31.07.1885 in Zevenaar. They had two sons: Jacob, b. 14.07.1917 in Oude- Tonge and Louis David, b. 22.02.1920 also in Oude-Tonge.

Meijer Marcus was a butcher. He came to Sommelsdijk on 15.08.1914 and worked there as a butcher servant at butcher Leuw. In 1915 he left for Oude-Tonge to start his own butcher shop there. In May 1942 he was forced to close the butcher shop. On or about 21.05.1942 he was arrested - on vague charges by an NSB butcher - and imprisoned in Rotterdam. After a short time he was deported via camp Amersfoort to Mauthausen, where he was murdered on 25.06.1942.

At the end of August 1942, Ms Cohen and son Louis also had to leave Oude-Tonge. They find a hiding address in The Hague. Louis regularly travels there, without a star and with an identity card on which the J has been made invisible. One day he gets into a dispute with a German soldier. Louis returns to the hiding place, but is followed and on 10.10.1942 he and mother are arrested there.
Mother Sophia Cohen is transported to Westerbork, from where she is deported to Auschwitz on 26.10.1942. She was gassed there on 29.10.1942.
Louis is first transferred to Amersfoort camp, but on 13 or 16.01.1943 3000 severely weakened prisoners, including Louis, are taken to Vught camp, which was used as a concentration camp on 05.01.1943. Sick and exhausted, Louis dies there on 27.01.1943 at 5.40 am. According to a statement by Nanny Cohen-Meijer, who had evidence of this, he was left starving to death in a bunker.
