Rue Neuve, 27 Pepinster
Next weekend 5 new Stumbling Stones in Belgium
On Saturday 10, Sunday 11 and Monday 12 February 2018, Gunter Demnig will install 15 new Pavers of Memory in Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders. Under these pavers, 6 will be placed with the names of resistance fighters. Although the majority (about 90%) of these pavers bear the names of Jews, they are not reserved for them, but rather are intended to commemorate all victims of Nazism.
It is the National Confederation of Political Prisoners and Courts (CNPPA), founded on September 28, 1946, which, although the ranks are declining and considering its liquidation, wanted to spend part of its last budget on honor 6 resistance fighters by the Society for the Memory of the Shoah to ask for Pavers of Memory to be placed in their name.
Laurent Joseph (Kik) Degueldre was a doctor in Pepinster and lived at 27 Rue Pepin. During the war he was active in the resistance and together with his wife, she sheltered the Jewish girl Rose Micmacker. In May 1943 he was arrested during a Nacht und Nebel action and deported to Kamp Esterwegen. His memorial-stone (so-called Stolperstein) was placed at the address where he was arrested. Degueldre was a member of the lodge Le Travail in Verviers and was one of the seven founding members of Liberté Chérie in Esterwegen. On December 19, 2011, Laurent Degueldre and his wife Maria Xhervelle were recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
