Jacob Louis Hammelburg, b. 13.10.1902 in Dirksland, owned a butcher shop at the Marktveld A45 (now nr. 18) in Sommelsdijk (corner Marktveld-Kerkstraat). The family also consisted of his wife Elisabeth Hammelburg-Zwarenstein, b. 10.04.1910 in Strijen, and daughter Hester Cato, b. 22.08.1938 in Sommelsdijk. Jacob Louis, his wife and daughter had to leave in August 1942 for camp Westerbork, where they arrived on 15.08.1942. From there they were deported to Auschwitz on 17.08.1942. Elisabeth and Hester Cato were gassed there on 19.08.1942 and Jacob on 26.09.1942. Simon Isaac Hammelburg, b. 04.12.1905 in Dirksland, brother of Jacob, lived with the family. Simon visited the RHBS in Middelharnis between 1918 and 1923 and obtained his final diploma there. He studied for a rabbi. He married Erna Rosetta Heertjes on 24.09.1942 in Amsterdam, daughter of the chief rabbi of 's-Hertogenbosch, but she did not live in Sommelsdijk. Simon arrived in camp Westerbork on 09.10.1943. From there he was deported to Auschwitz on 23.03.1944, but was murdered in Central Europe on 31.08.1944. Unfortunately no photo is available of him. On the photo: On the left photo is Elisabeth Hammelburg-Zwarenstein on the right. The names of the other ladies are unknown, they are probably Sisters of Elisabeth. One of them has Hester on his arm.
