Harm Ham lived during the war at 48 van Brakelplein in Groningen and was married on 19-8-1921 to Sjoukje de Boer. He was a reformed house and had two children. Harm worked for the police as a detective and was arrested by the SD on 9-3-1943 for refusing to transport arrested Jews. After a captivity in the Scholtenshuis, he was taken to camp Vught. On 26-5-1944 he arrives in K.L. Dachau where he is registered under number 69049. After six months imprisonment, he is transferred east to K.L. Auschwitz where he is in Kdo. Monowitz ended up in late November 1944. Auschwitz III was the labor camp, where companies such as IG Farben and Krupp Stahl had sites. The evacuation of Auschwitz and the satellite camps started on January 18, 1945 when about 60,000 most Jewish prisoners were on a death march to Wodzislaw (Loslau in the German) were sent. There they were stowed in freight wagons and sent to other concentration camps further west, to camps such as Gross-Rosen, Buchenwald, Dachau and Mauthausen. At least 15,000 people died or were killed on that death march. Three days later, on January 21, 4,000 prisoners, mostly Jews, were expelled from Blechhammer camp. Given the notes in the Groninger Archief and the date of death, it is plausible that Harm Ham is one of the dead who died on these marches due to exhaustion. He was 49 years old.
