Philip Vlessing was born in IJmuiden in a musical family in 1905. His mother, Bertha Blok, was a pianist and his father, Sam Vlessing, was a composer, conductor and director of a music school in IJmuiden. Philip played cello, composed music and followed his education at the conservatory in Antwerp and later in The Hague. In 1930 he married Rachel Viskoper, whom he met in The Hague. In 1934 they took over the music school of Philips Vader after his death, but closed these three years later. Philip remained active in the music world as a conductor of the operetta association of IJmuiden and as a member of the Haarlem Trio. On August 26, 1942, Philip was arrested during a raid and brought via Westerbork to Cosel for forced labor. He died on April 30, 1943 in Central Europe under unknown conditions. His sister Jeanette survived the war by diving into Friesland. Rachel Viskoper, born in 1907 in The Hague, married Philip in 1930 and moved him to IJmuiden. After the closure of the music school, they lived on Badhuisstraat. Rachel was brought to Westerbork on 26 August 1943 and a few days later deported to Auschwitz, where she was murdered on 3 September 1943 on arrival. Philip and Rachel had no children.
