Leliestraat 18 Hengelo
Simon Machiel Noach (Master Noach) was head of the Public Lower Willemsschool in Hengelo (Overijssel) and also foreman of the local branch of the SDAP. His school was next to the police station. During the raid on Sunday, September 14, 1941, he was arrested and a few days later deported to Mauthausen, in a group of 105 Twente Jewish men. All were murdered. In June and July (1941) it had happened more often than before that German military telephone cables had been cut; August brought twenty-eight of those cases, by far the most in the Achterhoek near Hummelo. More than twenty of these were the work of a seventeen-year-old blacksmith's hand from Hummelo, Jan Veldkamp. He was arrested about September 20 and made a full confession. Before his arrest, however, two cables were cut near Enschede on 12 and 13 September, presumably by another saboteur, and it was this activity that, against the background of the irritation that had already developed within the German apparatus, led to it. that a series of punitive measures was decided; the heaviest was aimed at the Jews of Twente. Approx. One hundred of them were arrested on Sunday, September 14 with the cooperation of the municipal police in Enschede and, together with ten others who came from Hengelo, were locked up in the municipal lyceum in Enschede for two days and then transported to Mauthausen.
