Van Helomalaan 10 Wolvega
In the 1920s and 1930s, Wolvega had three thriving export butchers that mainly owed their existence to the slaughtering of pigs. The slaughtered animals were packed in crates and for the most part exported to England. They went down in history as the London pigs. One of the three slaughterhouses was owned by Messrs Mendels and Slager. The company was located in a building slightly north of the track. When, over time, this building became too small, the slaughterhouse was taken over from the Leser family, which was just south of the railway. One owner of the company, the Slager family, lived in Steenwijk and the other owners, the two gentlemen Mendels, in Wolvega and Meppel. Emanuel Mendels lived at the Van Helomalaan in Wolvega. He was married to Elsje Davidson, born in Lemsterland in 1884. They had a foster son, Abraham Delmonte, a relative of Emanuel Mendels. Abraham Delmonte worked at the company as an accountant. Wolvega had a deaf-mute brother and sister of Emanuel Mendels: Levi Mendels and Hendrica Mendels. On December 14, 1942, Emanuel Mendels was arrested, taken to Westerbork and deported from there to Auschwitz. He was killed in the Birkenau subcamp. On March 16, 1943, his wife Elsje Mendels-Davidson was arrested, taken to camp Westerbork and deported to Sobibor a day later, on March 17, 1943. Stellingwarfs Tiedschrift, nr 32, 17-19 Abraham Delmonte (also known as Abram Mendels) was the foster son of Emanuel Mendels and his wife Elsje Davidson. After the capitulation of the Netherlands, he ended his life on May 15, 1940. He is buried at the Portuguese-Jewish cemetery in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel.
