Anemoonstraat 43 Zwolle
With this stumbling stone we commemorate Andries Pagrach, born in Rijssen on May 13, 1908. He was 36 years old when he died on February 23, 1945 in Flossenbürg. Andries was married to Elisabeth Helena Cohen (Teteringen 1907). She survived Auschwitz and died in 2009 at the age of 101 in The Hague. The couple had no children. ** Andries and Elisabeth married on June 3, 1938 in Wierden and went to live in Seringenstraat 35 in Zwolle. On August 19, 1940 they moved to 43 Anemoonstraat. Andries was an insurance inspector, Elisabeth nurse. On 4 October 1942, Andries was registered in the Westerbork transit camp. This date makes it plausible that he was deported directly from a labor camp in Overijssel or Friesland to Westerbork. Elisabeth arrived in Westerbork on March 8, 1943. Apparently she was ill and was therefore allowed to stay in Zwolle for some time. Both have managed to make themselves indispensable in Westerbork. They belonged to the so-called Stammlager, with more chance of postponing deportation to the East. They succeeded until September 4, 1944. Then they are transported to Theresienstadt with a large number of others from the Stammlager. Andries went on to Auschwitz on September 29, 1944, Elisabeth on October 4. Both survived the selections on arrival and were admitted to the labor camp. Andries received the camp number B 11303. Shortly thereafter, the systematic closure of the camp began under pressure from the advance of the Russians. The gas chambers in Auschwitz-Birkenau were closed and prisoners were taken to more western concentration camps. This often happened in forced day marches, the so-called death marches. Many of the already weakened prisoners died on the way. Elisabeth escaped during one of the death marches and ended up with the Russians. Subsequently, she returned to the Netherlands via the Americans in the summer of 1945. Andries ended up via the KZ Sachsenhausen on 6 February 1945 in the concentration camp Flossenbürg in Bavaria. Originally the prisoners had to work in a granite quarry, later in the war they were used for the German arms industry. Andries' camp card states as a profession Krankenpfleger, health care provider. By the end of the war, food, housing and medical care were extremely poor. Andries died here after a few weeks.
