Torenstraat 12
De Bilt
Herman Jakobs was born in Vlagtwedde (Friesland) in 1890. In 1922 he married Rachelina de Vries, this marriage has remained childless. Herman Jakobs was a commercial agent in coffee and tea and the couple came to live in De Bilt from Groningen on August 18, 1930. First at 47 Oude Brandenburgerweg, then 26 Prins Hendriklaan and from 3 May 1937 at 27 Hessenweg. On 4 September 1941 they moved to 12 Torenstraat. Shortly afterwards, on December 1, his wife Rachelina Jakobs-de Vries died in Amersfoort, we can assume from a natural cause.
In 1941 the Jews in the Netherlands were increasingly restricted in their freedoms. In mid-1942, the Jewish residents of the municipality of De Bilt were forced to move to Amsterdam. In Amsterdam they had to deal with more far-reaching freedom-restricting measures. After a call to report, after a house search or after a raid, Camp Westerbork became the next station for them on the road to destruction.
We can no longer determine exactly how it went with Herman Jakobs. I have found no indications that he has moved to Amsterdam. On his personal card in the population register, dated May 21, 1943, it is stated that he left the municipality and went to Germany. He arrived in Westerbork on March 23, 1943 and a week later, on March 30, he was deported to Sobibor. Being locked in a cattle car crammed with people for three days must have been a miserable journey. There are no survivors from this transport, it is assumed that all were murdered in the gas chambers immediately after arrival on April 2, 1943. So is Herman Jakobs, 53 years old.
His sister Gholina, a nurse, was murdered in Auschwitz on September 10, 1943.
A brother of his, Benjamin, was a butcher in Amsterdam and was therefore “sperrt” for a long time, that is to say, he received a postponement of deportation. He died in the war and later had children. I have not yet been able to contact relatives through this line.
By laying this stumbling block and by telling the story, we want to contribute to ensuring that Herman Jakobs and the unimaginably great injustice that was done to him does not fade into oblivion.
