Humcoverstraat 74 Meerssen
Bertha Zeligman was born in 1875 - eleven years after her parents' marriage. Her brother Salomon is the seventh child of eight of Mendel and Juliet. The two eldest, Jozef and Sophia, die before the war starts, the third child is not named. It is stillborn. All five children who follow die in the camps. Bertha in Sobibor, Carolina, Adolf, Salomon (van de Markt in Meerssen) and Louis in Auschwitz. Bertha was born in Meerssen, but left on June 26, 1925, at the age of 50, for The Hague. It is not known why she returned on September 1, 1932. She will probably buy the house at 74 Humcoverstraat and live there. It is known that the house was forcibly sold provisionally on October 22, 1942 and definitively on February 15, 1943. Bertha stays with the tenant of the building in boarding house. In January 1943, all mayors in Limburg were instructed to inform the Germans which 'Volljuden' are still registered in their municipality. The mayor of Meerssen will send his overview on 5 February. He must also report which Jewish people have a postponement of evacuation, removal, 'Umsiedlung' and why. Illness has previously been a reason for the Germans to send some of them back home after they were arrested or reported. He writes about Bertha: 'Ist krank und kann sehrbeschwerlich gehen. Leidet an Gelenkrheumatismus, 67 Jahre alt. ' At the beginning of April it is clear that Jewish people are again on the nomination to be deported from municipalities in Limburg. On April 6, the police reported that 'the forced evacuation of Jews to Vught that has already started in some municipalities (......) should not be carried out before 8-4-43. However, Jews who want to move to Vught as quickly as possible of their own accord should not be prevented from doing so. ' Bertha therefore leaves on her own to the station of Meerssen and to Maastricht. The mayor informs the regional police president in Eindhoven by telegram: 'Jews here normally leave without a disturbance.' Bertha is also taken to camp Vught on 12/13 April 1943, she goes on the train to Westerbork on 11 May and from there to Sobibor where she dies on 14 May.
