Salomon Heijmans was born in Amsterdam in 1869. He is the eldest son of Levie Heijmans (1843-1927), 'butcher' and attendant at the Israelite Vleeschhal, and Reine van Amerongen (1845-1933). Salomon comes from a family with seven children. Two of them have already died before the Second World War. The other five were murdered in the concentration camps. Salomon works as a diamond cutter in Amsterdam. In later documents (commercial) traveler is indicated as his profession. In 1907 he married Petronella van Ments, thirteen years younger, in Weesp. Petronella van Ments was born in 1882 in Harderwijk. She is the daughter of Mordechai van Ments (1837-1906), shopkeeper in Harderwijk and his second wife Gulia Hamburger (1851-1925). Salomon and Petronella live in Hilversum for the first years of their marriage. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Hilversum was a place with a growing Jewish community. Before the Second World War, more than a thousand Jews lived there. Here they had two children, a daughter Reine (1908-1943) and a son Max (1911-1944). They then move to Amsterdam where they live until December 1915. After a short stay of a few months in The Hague, Rotterdam became their next residence from 8 March 1916. Salomon is then a traveling salesman. In July 1925 the family moves to Scheveningen, where they live at 40 Frankenstraat, their last official address. During World War II, the Germans built the Atlantic Wall, a defense line that runs along the coast from the border with Spain to northern Norway. The Frankenstraat is located within this Atlantikwall, built by the Germans. In May 1942, more than 10,000 Scheveningen residents who live near the beach were forced to leave their homes. In the autumn, all residents who live in a wide strip along the coast will eventually have to leave this area and find shelter elsewhere. This may have played a part in the decision of the Heijmans family to go into hiding in October 1942. Reine Heijmans, the eldest child of Salomon and Petronella, was born in Hilversum on January 15, 1908. Reine is named after her grandmother. However, she is also called Trees. As piano teacher Trees Heymans, we come across her in small advertisements in, among others, Het Vaderland (1930) and the Joodsche Weekblad (1941). Trees continues to live with her parents in Scheveningen until the very end. Son Max Heijmans was born on April 20, 1911. Max works as a journalist, shorthand typist and archivist. One of the documents from the War Archive of the Red Cross states that Max is 'Gesperrt' because of his position as a shorthand typist at 366 Lijnbaangracht. This is where the general secretariat of the Jewish Council is located. A Sperre is a temporary exemption from deportation. Max married Annie Spanjaard on 24 June 1942 in The Hague. In all likelihood, the marriage was consummated hastily and informally, which the Jewish faith allows in dire circumstances. The timely acquisition of a Sperre for Annie probably played a role in this. Anna Eleonora Fortunata Spanjaard was born in Nijmegen on 28 October 1910 as the daughter of Emil Bernhard Spanjaard (1879-1942), descendant of the family of textile manufacturer Spanjaard from Borne, and of Sophie van Ameringen (1880-1943). Her call sign is Annie. Annie has two sisters: Noortje (1914-1986) and Selma (1911-2010). Both survive the war. Annie's parents, who are divorced, both perish in the war. Her father is killed in Sachsenhausen and her mother in Auschwitz. Annie studied physical geography in Utrecht. She is in possession of a L.O. deed and has worked at the Department of Social Affairs1. According to some records, she also worked as a housekeeper and a teacher. Max and Annie have lived at Nieuwe Keizergracht 25.2 since they got married in Amsterdam. According to the municipal administration, they left for Germany on 2 December 1943. However, according to Willem Brugman Jr., from 1 October 1942 Max and Annie went into hiding together with Max's parents in Oisterwijk, where they were arrested on 3 October 1943. See the box at the end of this section. It was unknown to Willem Brugman that Reine Heijmans was also hiding with his parents. Probably through betrayal, the Germans tracked down the hiding place of the Heijmans family. Maarten Spaans and Marinus van Dusschoten, two notorious agents of the Documentation Service of the Hague State Police, the unit that was involved in, among other things, the tracing and arrest of Jews and Jewish helpers, played an important role in arresting the Heijmans family. According to the report drawn up by Maarten Spaans on 6 October 1943, Salomon Heymans, with his wife and daughter, declared that they had been living there since September 1942 without the required permit. They were in possession of F.1.825.--, which money was seized. Max Heymans and wife A.E.F. Spaniards had been staying there since February 1943. They were in possession of F.219.--, which money was also seized. The above-mentioned Jews were detained on October 43, 1943 in the German Police Prison in Scheveningen. According to Spaans, Max Heymans and his wife A.E.F. Spaniard in possession of false identity cards, while the 'J' of the other Jews had been removed from the identity card.4 Maarten Spaans was sentenced on March 3, 1949 by the Special Court in The Hague to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of more than 362 arrests, of which 260 died in captivity. Later life was commuted to 22 years. He was finally released in 1959 after more than 14 years of imprisonment.5 Maarten Spaans also lived in Scheveningen, less than a kilometer as the crow flies from the home of the Heijmans family. After their arrest, the five members of the Heijmans family are transferred and imprisoned in the Oranjehotel, the German police prison in Scheveningen. On October 9, 1943, Salomon and Petronella, with their daughter Reine and their son Max and daughter-in-law Annie, were transported from Scheveningen prison to Westerbork transit camp.
