Vinkwijkseweg 32 Zeddam
Antonius Gerardus Johannes 'Tonny' Pas, born on April 8, 1924 in Bergh, was a resistance fighter during the Second World War. He lived in Zeddam and was involved in illegal activities, such as taking care of film performances and reusing parts of crashed aircraft. From Plexiglas he made letter openers with the image of Queen Wilhelmina and seal rings with red-white-blue dots. Tonny was arrested on 9 September 1944 by the Sicherheitsdienst on the municipal Lyceum in Doetinchem, where he followed the HBS. The Germans arrested him because he had no official exemption for the work service. After his arrest, Tonny was locked up in Camp Amersfoort, where he met Dominicus Ettema, another prisoner from Zeddam. Tonny wrote about this in a letter to his girlfriend Joke. Later he was transferred to the Neuengamme concentration camp, where he died of enterocolitis on December 15, 1944, although it is likely that several factors contributed to his death. Tonny was cremated in Neuengamme and has no apparent grave. Tonny's acts of resistance have been documented, and he is commemorated in memorial book 34 of the War Graven Foundation, in which 2,455 Dutch people are mentioned who died in Neuengamme. Tonny's death was officially registered in Bergh on September 26, 1946, almost a year after the war. His life story and tragic end are also described in the Jubilee book Bergia Zeddam.
