He was unmarried, however in the Joodsche Weekblad no. 18 of August 8, 1941 there was an announcement of an engagement on August 9, 1941 of “Liny van Straten from Rumpt and Ben van Gelder from Eibergen. Lina van Straten, born in 1916 and commonly known as Liny, was a daughter of Louis van Straten and Minna Hes. However, as far as is known, it is no longer a marriage. In 1921 Benjamin van Gelder's family left for Zwolle and Bettus moved from there to Eibergen, where he lived at Groenlosestraat A286. According to his registration card from the library of the Jewish Council, he had been working there since 11 August 1938 as a religious teacher and pastor, and in Borculo from 1 November 1941. Because of his position, Bettus was "gesperrt bis auf weiteres" by the Jewish Council. The registration card of the Jewish Council also states that Bettus van Gelder had to move from Eibergen to Amsterdam, to Schalk Burgerstraat 13 and then to Transvaalstraat 117. He was transferred on 11 June 1943 to Westerbork and from there deported on 6 July 1943 to Sobibor where he was immediately murdered on arrival there on July 9, 1943.
