Aalsterweg 125 Eindhoven
Gerard Gans was born on October 4, 1919 and his brother Eppo on February 22, 1923 in Assen. The Gans family came to Eindhoven from Onstwedde in Groningen in 1925. The father is Jewish, the mother is not, so the couple's 11 children are considered half-Jewish. Half-Jewish Dutch people are generally not deported. The father has converted to Christianity and the strict religious family goes to the Baptist church in the Iepenlaan. Gerard and Eppo are active in the youth work of the municipality. The father has to wear a Jewish star and survives the war because he can go into hiding with fellow believers in Friesland. The father has a herring inlay at Aalsterweg, where the mother also helps. Gerard Gans is a flower trader by trade, his brother Eppo works at the Nat Lab of Philips. The two brothers become very active in the resistance where they help Jews go into hiding and commit sabotage against the Germans and NSBers in various ways. The brothers are both betrayed, first Gerard, probably by an acquaintance. Eppo is later arrested in an ice cream parlor on the Stratumseind, where his resistance group meets regularly. Gerhard Gans is first brought to Camp Amersfoort. On March 31, 1943 he was transferred to Camp Vught and a few days later, on April 2, to Westerbork. Gerard Gans was deported from Westerbork to Sobibor on 6 April 1943. During the trip he throws a card to his parents from the train showing that he knows exactly what to expect. He was murdered on arrival in Sobibor on April 9, 1943. Eppo Gans arrives in Camp Vught on August 18, 1943. From there he sends letters to his parents. It is unknown if and when he was sent to Westerbork. He may have been deported to Auschwitz from Vught on 3 June 1944, together with Philips-Kommando employees. Eventually he ends up in Neuengamme. This camp, in the north of Germany. does not have gas chambers or comparable methods of massively killing people. Nevertheless, many die because of the inhuman conditions and medical experiments. This is also the case with Eppo Gans. He died on February 26, 1945, four days after his twenty-second birthday. presumably from tuberculosis. In the resistance hero neighborhood in Acht the Gebroeders Ganslaan is named after them.
