Joseph van Vlijmen was born on April 2, 1901 in Vlissingen. His parents are Andreas van Vlijmen and Marianne Epstijn. Joseph has two brothers, one of whom died at an early age. On September 23, 1925, Joseph married Fanny Blomhoff from Eindhoven. The couple settles in Rotterdam where a son is born on September 25, 1927: André. The child dies sixteen hours after birth. Shortly after, Joseph and Fanny move to Eindhoven. Their second son was born here on August 10, 1929: Bernard André. Joseph does a good job as a procurator and is a local representative of the Jewish Council. The family lives in a beautiful house on the Gaailaan. The war changes the quiet life of Joseph, Fanny and Bernard when the family have to share their home with Salomon Zeelander, his wife Margaretha and their children Menno and Marianne. The Zeelander family was forced to leave their home. The Zeelander children are slightly older than Bernard. In March 1942 both families have to leave the house in the Gaailaan to make way for the circle leader of the NSDAP in Eindhoven, Herr Zimmermann. Joseph, Fanny and Bernard van Vlijmen are part of the Philips Kommando in Camp Vught. On June 3, 1944, the whole family was deported to Kommando Wüstergiersdorf. Bernard André van Vlijmen died here on May 9, 1945 from the hardships of the concentration camp. His father Joseph van Vlijmen died on August 14, 1945 in Kommando Wüstegiersdorf from the consequences of the hardships of the concentration camp. Fanny van Vlijmen-Blomhoff survived the war. She died in 1991 in Bussum. She is the daughter of Bernard Blomhoff and Regina Levano (family 215).
