Hans Kahlenberg was a manufacturer of lingerie. He was born in Wanfried in 1904. Mother Elsbeth Kahlenberg-Rosenberg was born in 1907 in Essen. There Hans and Elsbeth married in May 1931, he was 26 at the time and she was almost 25 years old. The eldest daughter Helga was born in Essen on July 27, 1932. After that, the couple took refuge in the Netherlands, probably in the hope that there would be a safer future for them. Daughter Henriette was born on October 27, 1935 in Hillegersberg. In February 1941 the family moved to 99 Hoge Gouwe. Helga went, according to Ies Cohen, to the Jewish school behind the shul on the Turfmarkt. Maybe she took her younger sister there too, at least it wasn't far. Cross the bridge in front of the house, turn left and right and she was there. You can see her walking now that you've seen the picture with her checkered dress. Ies Cohen wrote about her: “As far as I know, only my sister and I and a boy Beek (son of the general practitioner Dr. Beek) survived. Here I remember my classmates Helga Kahlenberg, Johnny Beek and Mirjam and Mozes Schenkolewski. ” At the end of October 1942 the family had to go to Westerbork. Six months later they were deported with transport 64. The train contained 2,511 people, including 620 children, including Helga and Henriette. Immediately after arriving in Sobibor on May 21, 1943, father Hans, mother Elsbeth and their young daughters Helga and Henriette were killed. Gertrud Birnbaum was born in Schweidwitz in 1875; who her parents were is unknown. She married Moritz Brahn in November 1897, he died in Berlin in May 1918. In 1939 Gertrud arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee. First she lived in Rotterdam, then she went to Gouda. On February 25, 1941 she came to live at Hoge Gouwe 99. She arrived here around the same time as the Kahlenbergs and stayed here for about a year and a half. She had to go to Westerbork in September 1942. She arrived there on the 30th, her deportation to Auschwitz followed on November 2. Immediately upon arrival, she was murdered there on November 5, 1942.
