Sophiastraat 53 Gouda
Annie Dorothea Richter (23) lived here for more than six months. She was born on December 28, 1919 in Annaberg in the Ore Mountains. According to her Jewish Council card, she was a maternity assistant and worked as a domestic help. In early August 1939 she fled Nazi Germany and came to The Hague. Via Rotterdam and Doorn she eventually ended up in Gouda on 28 February 1942. From August 1941 her then 26-year-old brother Gerhard and 21-year-old sister-in-law Gertrud Richter-Kraus lived there. Annie's brother Gerhard had - when that was still possible - a trade in lampshades and curtains. In Gouda, Annie worked for six months as a night nurse in the Central Tehuis. Director Sara Teixeira de Mattos told Rev. van Itterzon about the raids at the end of 1942, he wrote about it in the book "Gouda in the Second World War". In my book "Hier Woonden - Stolpersteine Gouda" I cite what she told him on pages 157 and 158 in my story about the residents of Oosthaven 31. "Not a week passed before we were visited by the Dutch police in our Home; these were guys who had the fine task of fetching so-called Jews. Many of our staff had to come along… "It is quite possible that Annie may have been one of those arrested staff at the retirement home. On a photo from Tom Verwaijen's collection in my book, you see Annie at the back third from the left. There they stand amidst staff members in the garden of the Central Home. All wear a Star of David on their clothing, so it is almost, or already, summer 1942. Next to her is Bertus Meijer, Leo Vroman's nephew, who worked here as a servant. Not long after, Annie was arrested. Bertus and his sister Puck, who worked as a day nurse in the home, also had a bad end. On October 14, 1942, Annie was imprisoned in Westerbork. Here she was held for almost a year. Perhaps as a young sister she could hold her own in the transit camp for a while, the hospital was large and well-equipped. On August 31, 1943, her deportation came to Auschwitz, where she was murdered immediately upon arrival. Annie's brother Gerhard and his wife Gertrud were arrested by the police more than a month after Annie and imprisoned in Westerbork a few days later in early December 1943. Annie had already been deported and murdered by then. On their Jewish Council cards you can see that they were liberated in Westerbork. A few years after the war, the couple emigrated with their daughter and son born in Gouda to Canada. One Stolperstein now recalls Annie Dorothea Richter for this address.
