Zaanenlaan 62 Haarlem
Jacob Abraham de Vries started a glass and pottery business in Haarlem in the 1880s, known as "Firma Jacob de Vries". His sons, Bernard and Jacques, continue the business. In 1921 the store moved to Smedestraat 1. Bernard lived there with his wife Sara ('Suze') van Kloeten, their children Jacob ('Jaap') and Esther ('Stella'), and Sara's parents. Esther married Isaak van Vlijmen and lived in Hilversum; they had a daughter, Lisette, who survived the war. Jaap married Rosalie Stern and they lived at Zaanenlaan 62 in Haarlem. Their three children also survived the war. At the end of 1942, Bernard and Sara went into hiding, but were later arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where Bernard was murdered upon arrival. Bernard's brother Jacques survived the war. After the war, ownership of the store was formally transferred to Jacques and Lisette van Vlijmen, daughter of Esther. Sara van Kloeten was transferred to the Flossenbürg concentration camp in 1945 and died shortly before its liberation. Her father Salomon went into hiding and survived the war. Rosalie Stern, married to Jaap, did not survive the war. She died in October 1944 in Birkenau. Her husband Jaap survived the death marches and returned to Haarlem in May 1945. He recovered his right to the shop at Smedestraat 1, which continued to exist until 1973, but relinquished it in favor of his niece Lisette. Jaap also managed the assets of his sisters Engelina and Henriëtte, and his uncle Henri, who all died in Auschwitz and Birkenau.
