Jacob Lievendag was married to Bertha Elkus, who was born in Denekamp in 1869 as the daughter of Lefman Elkus and Sara Alexander. The marriage took place on October 31, 1894 in Denekamp. The couple had seven children, viz. Levie, Louis, Stella, Julia, Bertha, Roosje and Emma. Only Bertha and Emma survived the Shoah. Levie died one day after his birth in 1895; Louis died in November 1937, aged 41; Stella, who was married to Mozes Samuel, was murdered in Sobibor on May 21, 1943; Julia died in 1915 in Oldenzaal at the age of 14 and Roosje died in 1911, just four years old, also in Oldenzaal. Jacob Lievendag and his wife Bertha Lievendag-Elkus were registered in Westerbork on March 30, 1943. Apparently the 78-year-old Jacob was no longer in good health because he was admitted to the hospital of Westerbork, barracks 83. His wife Bertha Elkus had already been locked up in barrack 60 the day before, on March 29. Finally, on April 6, both were incarcerated. transported to Sobibor where they were immediately murdered on arrival on 9 April 1943.
