Berkelstraat 32 Valkenburg
Levie Sajet was a son of Benedict Hirschel Sajet and Sara Polak. His father died in Amsterdam and was buried on 28 October 1912 in the Jewish Cemetery Muiderberg and his mother also died in Amsterdam and was also buried on 9 December 1932 in Muiderberg. Levie Sajet, religious teacher, married on May 26, 1915 in Zaandam to Grietje Weiniger, a daughter of the hat maker Leib Weiniger from Lugowitz (Rusl.), Who was buried on February 25, 1923 in Muiderberg, and the Lithuanian Gerta Eljer; she was also buried there on January 19, 1940. Levie Sajet and Grietje Weiniger had three children together, i.e. Sara and Gerta in Amsterdam and Benedictus Hirschel (also called Benjamin or Benny), who was born in Elburg. Only Gerta survived the Sjoa. The other two children and their parents were murdered during the Holocaust. Levie Sajet's family moved in August 1929 from Emmen to Slotmakersstraat 14 in Leeuwarden, where Levie served as 2nd pastor in the Leeuwarden synagogue. On November 21, 1939, the family arrived in Gennep where they lived in the Groene Kruisstraat. On June 11, 1941 they moved to 54 Koningswinkelstraat in Valkenburg in Limburg, where Levie Sajet had been appointed as a teacher in June 1941 and on June 10, 1942 they moved to Valkenburg-Houthem, Berkelstraat 32. That was their last address before 11 November 1942 were deported to Westerbork and murdered by the Nazis. Daughter Sara, a clerk in Leeuwarden by profession, left in July 1937 to Hooge Naarderweg 49 in Hilversum, came back to Leeuwarden after a few months, but finally moved to Amsterdam in October 1937, Weesperplein 1. According to data from her registration card of the Jewish Council she has her MULO diploma and also her shorthand typing diploma; her previous profession was described as “secretary”. Furthermore, she was registered as an “unqualified nurse” based on her ID of the Jewish Disabled. Sara Sajet was registered with the Jewish Council on July 17, 1942, but was given a “barrage due to function”. On May 18, 1943 she was brought into Camp Westerbork, stayed in barrack 70 but was deported that same day to Sobibor, where she was murdered there on May 21, 1943. Daughter Gerta also lived in Leeuwarden from August 1929, but moved to Apeldoorn on 3 August 1937. Gerta was a 1st nurse and was in possession of her diplomas A and B. According to her registration card of the Jewish Council, her address was 106 Zutphensestraat, where the Central Israel Insane Institute "Het Apeldoornse Bos" was located and where she worked as a psychiatric nurse. Daughter Gerta, named after her Lithuanian grandmother Gerta Eljer, survived the Sjoa. Her registration card from the Jewish Council states that she was repatriated to Eindhoven after the war. After Leeuwarden, Levie Sajet, his wife Grietje Weiniger and their son Benedictus Hirschel lived in Gennep. On June 27, 1941, Levie Sajet was unanimously appointed as the new teacher after a trial service in Valkenburg. When registered with the Jewish Council on 19 August 1942, the residential address was Berkelstraat 32 in Valkenburg Houthem. On 11 November 1942 they had to report to Camp Westerbork. Previous attempts to prevent deportation did lead to some postponement, as noted on the registration card of Grietje Sajet-Weiniger: "postponement until September 1", but a letter from the chief rabbi to no avail. N.a.v. that letter was placed on the registration card of Levie Sajet on November 14, 1942: “unfortunately, nothing to do about it.” On November 16, Levie, Gretel and their son Benedictus Hirschel (Benny) were deported to Auschwitz, where Levie and Gretel were killed immediately upon arrival on November 19, 1942. Their son Benedictus Hirschel was almost 17 years old at the time and it is not impossible that he was on one of those transports to Auschwitz that stopped between 28 August and 12 December 1942 in Cosel (approx. 80 km from Auschwitz) and where the Germans unloaded boys and men who were fit for work who had to do forced labor in the surrounding camps. Benedictus Hirschel Sajet eventually died somewhere in Central Europe and his death date was set on March 31, 1944.
