Luikerweg 12 Valkenswaard
Henriëtte (Jetta) Klein, born on July 13, 1879 in Valkenswaard, experienced a tragic life that ended in the Polish concentration camp Auschwitz in October 1942, during the horrors of the Second World War. She was the only known Jewish person born in Valkenswaard. Although Jetta's exact cause and date of death have not been officially determined due to the loss of camp archives, it is believed that she, together with her husband Jozef de Vries, died on October 14 or 15, 1942 in Auschwitz, where they were gassed immediately after arrival. Jetta, nicknamed Jetta, spent only five years of her early life in Valkenswaard, where her father worked as a butcher and she lived on Kromstraat. The Klein family later moved to Woensel en Stratum. Jetta married Jozef de Vries in 1906 in Rotterdam, where they had a daughter together, Adèle. The couple initially lived in the center of Rotterdam and managed a 'warehouse of lingerie and underwear' called 'Insulinde'. The store was taken over in 1930, but Jozef de Vries continued to trade in draperies from their house on Prins Hendrikkade. During the war years, Jetta and her family were confronted with increasing anti-Jewish measures and discrimination. In October 1942, the raids began in Rotterdam, leading to the arrest of Jetta, her husband Jozef and their daughter Adèle. The family ended up in Westerbork camp and was eventually deported to Auschwitz. Jetta Klein's life story illustrates the fate of many Jews during the Holocaust. She, together with her family, became a victim of the systematic genocide committed by the Nazis. Her memory is kept alive, for example with a Stolperstein in Rotterdam, as a moving symbol of the horrors of the Holocaust and in memory of the victims, so that we do not forget.
