Annerweg 13 Zuidlaren
Before the war the family of Bernard and Eva de Vries lived here. Bernhard was born in Hoogezand in 1885 and was a merchant in rags and metals. On Sunday he stood with a cart with trade, including apples, on the Brink. Eva Henderika Magnus was born in 1891. They had four sons, the oldest of whom - Levie - left for Amsterdam in 1935 to find work in the diamond trade. He would survive the war there. His three brothers Jacob, Aäron and Simon were still living in Zuidlaren when their father died in Groningen hospital in 1939. Mother Eva was admitted six months later and in the Jewish psychiatric institution "Het Apeldoornse Bos" in Apeldoorn. There, on the cold winter evening of January 21, 1943, she was loaded as one of the 1,300 patients along with the nursing staff in a long train that was already ready - some in pajamas, others, bedridden patients even on mattresses - and transported to Auschwitz via Westerbork. where they were killed in the gas chambers immediately upon arrival on January 25, 1943. The family broke up. Jacob de Vries managed to make a living there and after the war left for Canada, where he stayed in good health a few years ago. The other two boys - Aaron and Simon - went into hiding, but were arrested in Groningen and Utrecht respectively. Aaron died on October 29, 1942 in Auschwitz-Birkenau, his brother died there on August 15, 1942. Because the mother and children had actually left Zuidlaren before the war, the names of the killed family members were not mentioned on the monument against the wall of the synagogue. In hindsight, that's a shame, because their names probably aren't listed anywhere else. By placing this "Stumbling Stones" in front of the house where they last lived as a family, this gap is somewhat filled.
