Johanna (Hännchen) Cohen-Juchenheim was born on January 24, 1858 in Neustadtgödens. She married the ten years younger Bernhard Cohen (Kohn), who was born on November 4, 1868, also in Neustadtgödens. Bernhard was a brother of Moritz Cohen and of Elise van Gelder-Cohen, who moved from their hometown to Aalten, Elise through her marriage to Philip van Gelder and Moritz because of the increasing anti-Semitism in Germany. From the marriage of Johanna and Bernhard Cohen, a daughter was born on August 19, 1895, Frieda Cohen (Kohn). When Bernhard died in Neustadtgödens in 1932 at the age of 67, Frieda was already a widow. Her husband, Albert Oppenheim, had died young, and Frieda was left with two children, George and Helga. Her father advised her, before he died, to remarry the widower Liepman Leezer. Liepman Leezer was born on August 28, 1884 in Onstwedde. From his first marriage to Minchen Sechels (born July 24, 1885) six children were born, the first of whom, Hilda, died young. When Minchen died on September 8, 1931. the care for the other children (Emma, Mathilde, Bertha, Mijnhard and Louisa) came down to the traveling salesman Liepman. Liepman Leezer's marriage to Frieda Cohen was performed on May 24, 1932 in Rüstingen (D). The seven children settled in Aalten, probably because Frieda's sister Elise and her brother Moritz also lived there. Liepman's oldest children soon left home, Emma to Assen, Mathilde and Bertha to Amsterdam and Mijnhard first to Apeldoorn, later to Arnhem. On November 7, 1935, another son was born from the marriage of Liepman and Frieda, who was given the name Bernhard. On December 28, 1938, mother Johanna Cohen-Juchenheim came to live with her daughter Frieda and son-in-law Liepman. On that occasion they moved to a house at Industriestraat 4. This house no longer exists; therefore the memorial stone for Johanna is placed in front of the synagogue. On April 10, 1943, Johanna, now 85 years old, responded to the call to leave for Camp Vught. She was deported to Sobibor via Westerbork and was murdered there immediately after arrival on 14 May 1943. Liepman and Frieda Leezer went into hiding with their youngest son Bernhard and survived the war, as did George and Helga Oppenheim, who went into hiding with other farming families. Mathilde Leezer, coming from Amsterdam, also found a hiding place in Aalten, but was betrayed and died on August 27, 1943 in Auschwitz.
