Willem Beukelsstraat 39 Amsterdam
Jan van Beers (9-11-1921) was the eldest boy from a family of 11 children. He lived in the Watergraafsmeer where he spent his childhood. He went to the Lidwinaschool on the Linnaeushof. As a big brother, he learned to cycle the youngest in the family and tied their skates under when there was ice. In 1944 he was in training for police inspector in The Hague, at the time under German supervision. He had to sign that he would cooperate with the Germans. Together with a number of others, the so -called Orange men, he refused and with that he signed his death sentence. In November 1944 he was arrested and taken to Camp Amersfoort. In a letter home he wrote that he had been given a 3 -hour reflection time to make a decision. And he asked nothing to say against Grandpa and Grandma of Deudekom, otherwise they would worry. From Amersfoort he was sent to the Neengamme concentration camp. There were also 110 of the 600 men from Putten, arrested during a retaliation. Jan died on December 15, 1944 by exhaustion and dysentery, only 23 years old. In February 1945 a police officer came to the door with a rag paper in his hand on which sister Doki the words: deceased. Jan, saw standing. Totally upset she called her parents. Jan was buried in a mass grave in Ohlsdorf near Hamburg. The October 44 Foundation, who wants to keep the event in Putten for posterity alive, found the portfolio of Jan, in addition to legacies of killed by Puttenaren. After 65 years! Gert van Dompseler from the foundation has returned the portfolio to the Van Beers family during a 4-May commemoration in the martyrs of Gorcumkerk. Teenagers from Putten and Germany and Pastor Hans-Joachim Stuck were also present. Doki and sister Luus viewed the contents of the portfolio at home and many memories came up when seeing the photos and the papers. They are proud of their brother, who turned out to have the heart in the right place. Of the 11 children, only Doki, Luus and Wim, who lives in Australia, are still alive.
