The Gypsy Family Franz: Allen were killed in labor camps where they were transported from Auschwitz. Just like Jews, "gypsies" were also said to be of an inferior race. They too were persecuted by the Nazis. But there were big differences with the persecution of the Jews. The urge to prosecute Jews came from the Nazis, and the persecution was imposed on the Dutch authorities. With the gypsies, it was often the Dutch authorities who took the initiative. Early in the morning on May 16, 1944, 248 Sinti and Roma were arrested throughout the country and taken to camp Westerbork. This was done under the watchful eye of the Dutch authorities. The Franz-Rosel family was arrested in Limburg's Beek. During the national raid on May 16, 1944, the then NSB mayor August Regout had the respected artist family Franz-Rosel picked up by police officers from Beekse Brabant. Father, mother and seven children ended up in Auschwitz via the Westerbork labor camp. The married son Manella, who lived elsewhere in Beek, managed to escape. Father Johann and wife Ernestine were gassed in Auschwitz. The children Hans and Peppi died in Buchenwald. The oldest daughter, Buntla, died in Ravensbrück and son Luitze in Sachsenhausen. The youngest three children, daughters Zilla and Medie and son Eifa, survived the war. http://www.beeksverleden.nl/2e_wereldgebruik/the_story_of/de_zigeneurfamilie_franz.html
