Rijksstraatweg 49 Haarlem
Philippus van Coevorden, born in Strijen as the sixth of eight children of Jozef van Coevorden and Roosje Kleinkramer, married Sientje van Wezel from Amsterdam when he was thirty. They settled in Maasdam and had their only son, Josephus Arthur, in 1919. Later they moved to Zandvoort and Haarlem, where they ran a cigar and radio shop. In April 1940 they moved to the Rijksstraatweg in Haarlem and started trading in gold and silver. During the Second World War, Philippus and Sientje went into hiding, but were betrayed in 1944 and sent to Westerbork. From there they were put on the final transport to Auschwitz, where they died shortly afterwards. Sientje, born in Amsterdam as the daughter of butcher Benjamin van Wezel and Kaatje Kleinkramer, was a cousin of Philippus. The couple initially lived in Maasdam and later in Haarlem. Many members of Sientje's family became victims of the Holocaust, although some survived. Their son Josephus, musically gifted, played jazz and swing music in The Hague. He went into hiding during the war but was caught in the summer of 1944 and sent to Auschwitz. He survived Auschwitz as a member of the camp orchestra, but died in 1945 during the return from the Dachau concentration camp.
