Schouwtjeslaan 53 Haarlem
Jacob Snijders was born in Enkhuizen as the thirteenth child of Leendert Salomon Snijders and Christina Heertjes. His sisters Elisabeth, Mietje, Jetje and Alida, and his brothers Asser and Samuel, were murdered in German camps. Jacob married Helena Zwart in 1922 and the couple lived from 1936 at Schouwtjeslaan 53 in Haarlem. Jacob worked as a teacher and later as commies at the provincial registry of Noord-Holland, but was fired in 1941 because of his Jewish descent. On August 23, 1942, the Snijders family received the call to report for "evacuation" to Germany. Despite the advice of Buren to go into hiding, Jacob decided to respond to the call. On August 25, 1942, the family reported and was deported to Auschwitz. On the way, in Kosel, their 15-year-old son Leo was separated from his parents for forced labor. Jacob and Helena were immediately murdered on arrival in Auschwitz on 31 August 1942. Leo collapsed due to exhaustion on April 30, 1943 in Poland. The Snijders-Zwart family was active in the Jewish community in Haarlem and friends with the De Zaaijer family. After the war, a cousin took care of the settlement of the family estate. Their tragic fate is commemorated with stumbling stones in Haarlem.
