Sweelinckplein 4 Heemstede
Sally (Salomon) had a label factory together with his brother in Arnhem. In 1940 the Mogendorff family to Heemstede, to Sweelinckplein 2. Lies moved with them. In 1940 the war started in the Netherlands. In May 1942, the Jewish star was mandatory and thousands of Jews, awaiting deportation, were forced to move to Amsterdam. There were many homes empty from Jews who were picked up at raids. The Mogendorff family also had to settle in Amsterdam, where they involved a top floor in the Rivierenbuurt. Lies did not go with the family and continued to live in Heemstede. The large deportations from the Netherlands also started in '42. Then the family decided to go into hiding with a farmer (Johannes Boogaard) in the Haarlemmermeer. He was known as an uncle Hannes. He and his family helped more than 300 Jews in the war. His farm, that of his father and his brother his brother were robbed three times by the Sicherheitsdienst (SD). Johannes' father, brother and son were arrested during one of these raids, they did not survive the war. Johannes himself was also picked up once, but released after interrogation. Even after several SD raids, he continued to hide Jews. The Mogendorff family was also arrested at one of these robberies on November 11, 1942. After they were arrested, they were transferred to the Westerbork camp close to Hooghalen. On February 6, 1943, Lies Grintjes (housekeeper of the family) received a postcard from Grietje. On February 20, 1943 she received the last postcard from Gré. How nice that you still write regularly. The children also like it when a letter comes from you and then old memories are always collected. We make up for it according to circumstances. Our mood sometimes leaves something to be desired. I work a lot in the open air. The niece Nel is sick and her condition is rather serious. But as long as there is life, there is hope. It is striking that Grietje only spoke about himself and the children in the letters. Soon was probably transported to Poland soon after they had been arrested. The last sign of life that Lies received was an address change, on 24 February 1943 stamped in Assen. At the change of address was the old address: "Bar 67 Westerbork" and it as a new address: "Unknown". Declarations from the International Red Cross show that Grietje Mogendorff-Meijer, Sara and Bernard were killed in Auschwitz two days after the change of address in Auschwitz and that Salomon Israel Mogendorff has already been transferred to Poland and was killed in on December 13, 1942 The same destruction camp. Salomon was 38 years old, Grietje 36 years old and the children were only 10 and 13 years old.
