Naarden
Jachet Melcer was born on October 2, 1893 in Chrzanow, Poland. Her departure from Poland is unclear, but on December 29, 1938 she settled in Naarden, the Netherlands, as an unmarried seamstress specialized in fur. She had two brothers, Bernard and Marcus, who were both tailors and lived in Amsterdam. The Nazi occupation took increasing stricter measures against Jews, such as mandatory registration in January 1941 and the wearing of the Jews star from May 1942. The Jewish community in Naarden and Bussum felt unsafe due to rumors about deportations. In May and June 1942, inventories were made of Jewish property and valuable assets had to be handed in. Jachet Melcer was evacuated from Naarden on 22 May 1942 and moved to Amsterdam. She was murdered in Sobibor on June 11, 1943. Her sister -in -law Cypora and Nicht Mirel were murdered in Sobibor on July 9, 1943. Brother Bernard survived the war in Camp Neuengamme, while brother Marcus died in Bergen-Belsen on 25 May 1945, shortly after the liberation. Sister -in -law Reina Beesemer survived the war by going into hiding. Nicht Mirl survived forced labor in camp Vught and deportation to Auschwitz.
