Benjamin van Gelder, a merchant in hides, was a son of butcher David van Gelder and Eva Leman. He married on August 8, 1899 in Avereest to Saartje Leman, a daughter of Abraham Mozes Leman and Bettje Karsseboom. The couple had one child: on May 20, 1900 their son David was born. However, one week later, on May 28, 1900, Saartje Leman died in Dedemsvaart, (presumably in childbirth) and was buried in the Jewish Cemetery there. Benjamin van Gelder remarried on 25 February 1902 in Goor to Johanna Mogendorff, born there on 12 August 1871, a daughter of the merchant Abraham Mogendorff and Henriëtte Polak. Seven children were born from this marriage, one of whom was stillborn in 1905. The other children were Abraham in 1903, Eve in 1904, Israel in 1907, Moses in 1910, Solomon in 1913 and Bettus in 1915. Nothing further is known of Israel; Salomon survived the Holocaust with his wife and child, but everyone else was all murdered during the Shoah Benjamin van Gelder and Johanna Mogendorff lived from 12 July 1935 in Gasthuisstraat 20 in Ommen. Presumably they made attempts to go into hiding and were arrested at some point¹) and taken to Westerbork. There they ended up in penal barracks 67, on which both were subsequently deported as "criminal cases" with the last transport to Auschwitz on September 3, 1944 and were immediately murdered there on September 6, 1944.
