Hendrica Mendels and Levi Mendels were sister and brother. Their parents were Abraham Mendels and Mina Davidson. The parental family had nine children. Of those, six died in the war: Hendrica herself, Pietje, Betje, Emanuel, Levi, and Sara. Hendrica and Levi, like their married brother Emanuel Mendels, lived in Wolvega. Together they ran a small shop in pots, pans and accessories on the Westeinde. They lived behind the case. Hendrica ran the shop and Levie went out with his cart, stacked with pots, pans and brooms. Levi Mendels was deaf and dumb. He was a well-known figure in Wolvega. Levi attended the Groningen deaf school from September 3, 1894 to July 13, 1904. According to school records, he was born deaf. His father was a merchant and a meat hacker. Levi taught tailoring. Levi had a deaf sister: Hendrica Mendels. In the list of members of the Amsterdam deaf association Guyot in 1934 and in a tribute to Hartog Zegerius an H. Mendels and an L. Mendels are mentioned. It is not entirely certain whether these are indeed Levi and his sister Hendrica, after all they lived in Wolvega in Friesland.
