Diezerstraat 56 Zwolle
Catharina Polak was born on June 13, 1912 in The Hague. She was the daughter of Isaac and Zipporah Polak. When she was almost 24 years old, Catharina married Aron Cutzien (calling herself: Krukziener). He lived in Zwolle and owned a jewelry store. This house was next to the Palthe building that can be seen in the photo. On January 7, 1938, Aron and Catharina had a daughter. She was called Judith Zipporah after her two grandmothers. The war started, Jews were bullied, Aron and Catharina also had a hard time. That is evident from a story. Mr. Krukziener had sold a gold ring to a German guard. This watchman returned the ring shortly afterwards and wanted his money back. Crutch seer gave him this. He was then ordered to say "I am a Jew" every time a German entered the room. In a letter to the Queen's Commissioner in Overijssel, the Mayor of Walsum states that he has forbidden him to do so. He also indicates that he ordered the Jewish chief rabbi not to comply with such orders. On 24 April 1941, the Krukziener family had to hand in their bicycles. They have to do that together with the other people, who have a surname 'between the A and the I'. Catharina only handed in a ladies bicycle in good condition. Later, the Jews were only allowed to swim in the pool at set times, because Jews and "ordinary people" were no longer allowed to swim together. Catharina has to deal with a great loss in 1942. Aron Krukziener dies on April 24, 1942. He was not killed by the Germans, but died of natural causes. Catharina is now a widow in this difficult time of war with her 3-year-old daughter. She goes into hiding. It is unknown where that was. On 12 January 1944 she was arrested and sent to camp Westerbork. Here she came together with Judith in a special penal barrack. They had to go in there because they had been in hiding. On January 25, Catharina and Judith were deported to Auschwitz with 947 other people. When they got there they were immediately killed on January 28, 1944.
