Nathan Frederik Israël was active in the resistance. He went into hiding. On 15 August, several members of the Landwacht (civil defence force), led by Robertson, secretary to Rost van Tonningen, raided the house where he was hiding. He was shot there. A few days later, he was buried anonymously at the Noorder Begraafplaats cemetery in Amsterdam. He was reburied in 1951.
A street in Amsterdam-Kadoelen is named after Nathan F. Israël. The caption reads: ‘Nathan Frederik Israël, born 30 August 1904. Participated in the armed resistance. Produced the illegal resistance newspaper De Waarheid in Amsterdam Noord. Killed in a firefight in Amsterdam on 16 August 1944’.
