Philip (Flip) Carel Hornemann was born on February 7, 1900 in Vlissingen. He settles in Eindhoven in 1930. He works at Philips as a buyer of oils, minerals and fats. His wife, Elisabeth (Bets) Docters, was born on January 15, 1907 in Boxtel. Until her marriage to Philip Homemann, she worked at Philips in the psychotechnical department. Flip and Bets have two sons: Eduard (January 1, 1933) and Alexander (May 31, 1936). Their aunt later says that Eduard (Edo) later wanted to become a doctor and Alexander (Lexje) dreamed of a profession as a cook. Philip Hornemann is employed by the SOBU group during the war. At the time, Elisabeth Hornemann was hiding on a farm with her son Alexander. The older son, Eduard, is staying on a different farm. When she hears that her husband and the other Philips employees have been taken to Camp Vught, she follows him and her two sons on August 20, 1942. More than nine months later, on June 3, 1944, the Philips-Kommando employees were deported to Auschwitz. Phihp Hornemann is sent from Auschwitz to Camp Langen Bielau where he works in the radio factory of the finna Hagenuk. In January 1945, just before the liberation of Auschwitz and Langen Bielau, a transport follows to Gross Rosen and a few weeks later to Dachau. Philip Carel Hornemann was murdered during this transport, on February 28, 1945. His wife is already deceased. Weakened by the physically demanding work and violence in Auschwitz, Elisabeth Hornemann falls ill and dies of typhus on December 31, 1944. After their mother's death, the two brothers are sent to the Neuengamme concentration camp outside Hamburg. There they are used with other children for medical tests with an anti-tuberculosis drug. Eduard and Alexander Hornemann were 11 and 8 years old at the time. In April 1945 the message from Berlin came that the children and the nurses must disappear because the advancing Allies are not allowed to know anything about the experiments. The children are taken to a school building in Hamburg at Bullenhause Damm 92-94. They are injected with morphine in the basement of the school building along with 18 other children and 28 adults and hang up while sleeping. It is then April 20, 1945. A street in Hamburg-Burgswedel, the Brüder Hornemann Strasse, is named after the two brothers. After the war, the Lex and Edo Hornemann park in Eindhoven was named after them and a monument was placed. They are commemorated annually by students of the van Maerlantlyceum. Fons Rademaker's 1990 film The Rose Garden is partly based on this history.
