Parklaan 18 Hattem
In this house, on the corner of Parklaan and Vliegenstein, the widow Rachel Rozeband lived with her two daughters Mietje and Reintje. Her son Joseph Rozeband lived in the same house with his wife Sofie van Straaten. Rachel Rozeband was a sister of David Cortissos, the famous pastor of the Jewish community in Hattem According to Jewish custom, the Rozebrand family lived in a Booth in the garden for seven days each year. During the Jewish festival Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), this booth was listened to the Biblical stories about a 40-year journey through the desert. Beautiful songs were sung that week. Children on their way to school stopped here and listened to these Jewish songs. Joseph (Jopie) was a singer in the Sjoel (the Synagogue in the Achterstraat), and he also sang in the Hattems Mannenkoor. He had a drapery business. Every day he went with his cargo bike along the farms and at the market in Hattem he sold his textiles. When rabbits were slaughtered at Christmas, Jopie bought the skins and dried them on an iron wire. Those sheets were a nice extra income for him. The neighbors remember that Mietje and Reintje often made delicious jams in the kitchen. This pleasant life in Hattem came to an end when Germany occupied the Netherlands. Peace was also over for this Jewish family. Unrest and fear reigned in the years that followed Jopie and his wife Sofie found a place to go into hiding, but when the whole family receives a call to report, they return to the family home. Jopie probably wanted to support his mother and two sisters if they were to be taken to a camp. On April 9, 1943, all five family members were taken by bus to camp Vught. Two girls next door and a boy boy wave goodbye to them, not realizing what will happen to their neighbors. Rachel Rozeband, 87, arrives in Westerbork on 9 May 1943. Two days later she is already taken to Sobibor, where she perishes on May 14 in the gas chamber. The others also go via Westerbork to the extermination camp Sobibor. Within three months after leaving Hattem, Mietje, Reintje and Joseph Rozeband were also killed in that camp. Only Sofie Rozeband - van Straaten survived the horrors of Auschwitch camp and returned to Hattem after the war.
