Maurits Velleman, born in Alkmaar on February 19, 1907, married on September 10, 1930 to Rebecca Cardozo. She was born in Amsterdam on June 1, 1909.
The couple has three daughters: Esther (Venlo, May 11, 1935), Marianne (Roermond, September 3, 1937) and Clara (Roermond, May 26, 1939).
Maurits Velleman is a textile merchant.
The family moved several times in a short period of time. In Venlo they live at Klaasstraat 18. In 1936 they move to Godsweringeningel 3 in Roermond. A few months before the outbreak of the war, the family settles for a short period in Eindhoven to move to Amsterdam on October 11, 1940.
They find shelter at Pretoriusstraat 93 I. Father Max thinks that they will notice less in Amsterdam and that it will therefore be safer there.
A befriended couple from the Distelstraat regularly travels to Amsterdam to secretly bring food to the Velleman family. One day the family is no longer there, they were taken to Westerbork on June 20, 1943 and deported to Sobibor on June 29, 1943. Maurits Velleman, Rebecca Velleman-Cardozo and their three daughters Esther, Marianne and Clara are murdered in Sobibor on July 2, 1943.
The brother of father Maurits, Levie Velleman, was born on January 1, 1906 in Alkmaar. He married in Utrecht on October 15, 1930 to Judith Querido. The couple have three children. A son born in 1934 died a month after his birth.
On July 29, 1940, Levie Velleman briefly moves in with the family of his brother Maurits. On September 18, 1940, he moved to Mockstraat 10 in Heer, near Maastricht. He is a dealer in galleries.
It is unknown when Levie Velleman was transported to Westerbork. It is certain that he was murdered in Auschwitz on August 14, 1942. His wife survived the war. She dies in Amersfoort in 1994.
