Langewal 38 Gorredijk
Esther (Esje) Colthof was born in Gorredijk on January 4, 1925, at 10 in the morning. She had no brothers or sisters. Her parents were Marcus Colthof, born May 22, 1889 in Gorredijk, and Liena Gudema, born September 13, 1881 in Onstwedde. The Colthof family came from Coevorden to Friesland around 1800. Many descendants went to Friesland, part of it to Leeuwarden, another part to Gorredijk. "Col-cool" can be translated "all good" (the Hebrew "tov" has become "cool" in Yiddish). Marcus, Esther's father, was a butcher by trade. Marcus came from a large family. Esther lived with her parents at Langewal 38 in Gorredijk. Levie Colthof, Esther's cousin, also lived with them. Liena and Esther were ordered on October 2, 1942 to go to camp Westerbork the next morning. A neighbor helped them carry the luggage to the tram the next morning. Esther said, as she got in: "Then shogge wy nor ris what fan de wrâld." ("Then we will see something of the world again") In camp Westerbork her mother became a nurse and Esther also got a job in the hospital. Marcus had to go to camp Westerbork on August 20, 1942. Esther celebrated her 18th birthday in camp Westerbork, where she received a cake from Gorredijk and a cake from a friend. She sent her last postcard to Camp Westerbork on her last day. On February 23, 1943, Esther was only transported to Auschwitz where she was gassed three days later. Marcus and Liena Colthof were deported to Sobibór and were murdered there on July 23, 1943.
