Roeterstraat 19 Amsterdam
Roeterstraat 9Gusta Kern (1908) and Henri Mulder (1912), a Jewish couple from Amsterdam, went into hiding in 1943 on three Achterhoek farms (Eppink, Wikkerink-Messink and in Lindert). During their last hiding with the family in Lindert in Sinderen, they were betrayed by a Dutch woman in the service of the SD. On December 13, 1943, they were arrested during a violent robbery, together with fellow hundreds of Alfred Wolf. After deportation to Westerbork, they wrote desperate letters for help, but in 1944 Gusta were murdered in Auschwitz and Henri "somewhere in Central Europe". Their falling had far -reaching consequences: Henri's whole family was eradicated, and Gusta's father died of a heart attack due to the suffering. Only thankfully courageous helpers, such as the Eppink and Wikkerink-Messink families, survived parts of their families the war. The Stolpersteine at their last home address in Amsterdam are their only tombstone, since their bodies were never found. Their story symbolizes the cruelty of the Holocaust, the betrayal of collaborators, and the resilience of hiding networks. The stones recall the loss of two young lives, but also of the countless others who had to give up their freedom and future.
