Wijde Poort 2 Gouda
Kurt Maijer (17) and Ernst Maijer (17) lived here with their mother Eva Erna Maijer-Soesman. Kurt and mother Eva lived at this address for more than two years, Ernst for almost two years. Eva Soesman was born in 1900 in Meerssen in Limburg, she came from a family of eight children. She married Max Maijer, born in Essen in 1894. Their eldest son Kurt was born in Herne on March 27, 1926, Ernst the following year in Essen-Steele on November 1, 1927. Together with father Max, the family came from Essen to Rotterdam in mid-October 1933. From 1937 they lived there in the Heemstedestraat. At one point, the paths of father Max and the rest of the family diverge. Father Max lived according to his Jewish Council card at 15 Nuinhofstraat in Nuth, not far from the birthplace of mother Eva. From there he had to go to work camp Overbroek. This camp acted as a portal for Westerbork. At the beginning of October 1942, Max had to go to this transit camp. His deportation to Auschwitz followed on 23 October. Perhaps he was one of 170 men who had to get off the train near Cosel for Auschwitz to do forced labor. He was murdered on March 31, 1944 in Central Europe. A Stolperstein in the sidewalk in front of Nuinhofstraat 7 in the current merged municipality of Beekdaelen now reminds of him. On February 12, 1941, Eva and her then 13 and 14 year old sons moved from Rotterdam to Gouda. They went to live in Wijde Poort 2. Eva was a seamstress. Going to school will no longer have been possible for the boys. Kurt is described as a metal worker, Ernst as a carpenter. The residence card states that the family was deregistered to Germany on February 23, 1943. This date is incorrect. According to a Gouda police report of 21 October 1942 on the "Arrest of Jews" mother Eva and son Ernst were arrested that day on orders of the Sipo, along with seventeen other Jews from Gouda. Apparently the police did not transfer that entire group of people to Amsterdam at the time. The Fuerst family was given some respite, as did Eva and her son. But the postponement was short-lived for Ernst, two months later he was still arrested. A police report of December 28, 1942 states that "Maijer went out with Aryan girls, while also calling names to an N.S.B.". In effect, this signed his death warrant. Together with Naaf Cats of the electricity shop on the Kleiweg, he was arrested by police officer Oudenaarden and taken to the Sipo in Rotterdam. The charge against Naaf was that he had insulted the German Wehrmacht. After being imprisoned for a few weeks on the Haagseveer in Rotterdam, Ernst and Naaf were detained in Westerbork on January 19, 1943. Ernst's deportation to Auschwitz followed on 9 February 1943. There he would have done slave labor for two years, until the Russians approached the camp and the Nazis sent the prisoners en masse on death marches. On February 10, 1945, Ernst was murdered somewhere in Central Europe. Mother Eva and her older son son Kurt "were" allowed to live a little longer in Gouda. They are recorded in an official report of Oudenaarden dated April 23, 1943. Nearly all Jews had already been expelled from Gouda at that time. Eva and Kurt, along with a few others, received a permit from the Zentralstelle in Amsterdam to "continue to live in Gouda" after 23 April 1943. However, this privilege did not last long. Kurt was imprisoned in Westerbork on August 3, 1943. Eve's Jewish Council card does not have a date of entry, she was in prison 66. She may have been in hiding. On August 24, Kurt was deported to Auschwitz. After four months of slave labor, he was murdered on December 28, 1943. Eva was the only one of the family to survive in Westerbork. There is no deportation date on her Jewish Council card. On December 5, 1945 she went to live in Damasstraat in The Hague. One Stolperstein in Beekdaelen recalls her husband Max. Two Stolpersteine in the Wijde Poort in Gouda are a reminder of their sons Kurt and Ernst Maijer.
