Iordensstraat 52 Haarlem
Rosa Idelsohn was born in 1865 in Nowy Schagor, a place in the then Russian Tsarenrijk, probably the current žagarė in Lithuania. She married Israel Lazar Rettich from Tarnów, and the couple lived in Leipzig, where they had six children: Wilhelm, Julius, Regina, Robert, Amalia, and Rudolf. Wilhelm Rettich (1892-1988) was a composer and conductor, who fled to the Netherlands in 1933 because of his Jewish descent and pacifist beliefs. In October 1937, Rosa and her youngest son Rudolf moved to Haarlem, where they lived with Elisabeth Bino, and later with Wilhelm in the Iordensstraat. In 1940 Rosa and Rudolf moved to the Tulpstraat in Hilversum. At the end of 1942 all Jews had to move to Amsterdam, and Rosa moved to the Loomssloot right. Eventually Rosa and Rudolf were arrested in Haarlem and brought to Westerbork, from where they were deported to Sobibor on April 6, 1943 and murdered on April 9, 1943. Wilhelm Rettich survived the war by diving under and dedicated his "Symphonic Variations für Klavier und Orchester" to his mother. He reached the age of 96 years. Rudolf, born in 1906, was murdered with his mother in Sobibor. Wilhelm also dedicated his "Sinfonia Giudaica" to Rudolf and his song "Rebekka" to his sister Regina.
