Wezellaan 8 Hilversum
Manfred Reiss was born on December 12, 1926 in Berlin-Schöneberg. His father, Leo Leiba Reiss (born July 2, 1895 in Grabowitz / Grabowiec), was a carpet merchant and married Herta Paula Lewin (born November 11, 1899) in 1920, who was born in Berlin. Manfred remained the only child of Herta and Leiba Reiss, the family lived in a spacious apartment at 29 Lutherstrasse (today: Martin-Luther-Strasse 17). The father's carpet shop was not far from the apartment at 17 Motzstrasse. In the spring of 1939 Manfred Reiss and his parents were able to emigrate to relatives in the Netherlands. They arrived in The Hague on April 26, 1939 and initially lived in different apartments there. The family then moved to 8 Wezellaan in Hilversum until 6 February 1941. Manfred Reiss was then a member of the chess association “de Gooische Toren”. The family moved back to Amsterdam and lived there until 23 July 1942 at 1 Bachstraat. From July 15, 1942, the systematic deportations of Jews from the Netherlands to Auschwitz began. The Reiss family fled to Belgium to avoid the arrests that were now beginning. On July 24, 1942, Manfred Reiss and his parents were arrested in Brussels / Saint-Gilles for illegally crossing the border and on August 3, transferred to the Mechelen transit camp south of Antwerp. From there, Manfred Reiss was deported to Auschwitz on August 11, together with his parents Herta and Leiba Reiss. Of the total of 999 people in this transport, 481 were gassed immediately upon arrival in Auschwitz two days later. Whether Manfred Reiss and his parents were among them cannot be established with absolute certainty; their track is lost with this transport. They were later pronounced dead.
