Levie van Gelder was born in Aalten on October 15, 1873 and married on November 22, 1904 to Jula Landau from Gemen (D), born there on October 29, 1882. He had a butcher shop on Dijkstraat in a building that was demolished in 2015. . Three children were born from the marriage of Levie and Jula. Erich, born November 18, 1909, also became a butcher. He moved to Apeldoorn on June 16, 1939, where he presumably worked in the Jewish psychiatric institution Het Apeldoornse Bos, as well as his sister Julchen, born on May 22, 1913. When the Germans treated nearly 1,200 patients in the night of January 21 to 22, 1943. 50 nurses went directly to Auschwitz. Julchen was probably one of them, because she was murdered in Auschwitz on February 12. The staff of Het Apeldoornse Bos who were left behind were transported to Poland via Westerbork. We know of Erich that he died on December 31 in Warsaw. Arnold (19), the youngest son of Levie and Jula, born on November 23, 1921, was the first Jewish victim of the Nazi terror from Aalten. When Jews were arrested in the Achterhoek on 7 and 8 October 1941 in reprisal for a sabotage, he was deported to Mauthausen, where he died on 13 November 1941. Levie (69) and Jula (60) voluntarily left for Vught on April 10, 1943 and were murdered in Sobibor on May 21 of the same year.
