Jan Lutmastraat 7 Groningen
Anko Scholtens was born on September 23, 1893 in Nieuwe Pekela, where his father, Jan Jans Scholtens (1861-1934) is headmaster. His mother is Hiltje van Hoogen (1863-1941). Anko would like to study theology, but ultimately chooses education. He works at primary school during the day and attends his own education in the evenings. In 1912 he receives the certificate of competence as a teacher. For several years he worked as a teacher in his native village and in Amsterdam. In addition, he follows courses at the Kweekschool met den Bible in Groningen (H.W. Mesdagstraat) to become a teacher in mathematics and higher mathematics for secondary education (completed in 1916 and 1922 respectively). In 1919 he became a teacher of mathematics at the Willem Lodewijk gymnasium and in 1921 also at the abovementioned teacher training college, of which he became director in 1942. Anko is very popular with his students and colleagues. On 2 May 1918 he married Sjoukje Jantina Elzenga (1888-1971). She is a craft teacher at the school Anko is affiliated with. Four daughters are born: Gezina Hilda (1919-2014), Hilda Cornelia (1921-2006), Tetteliena Hillechiena (1923-2009) and Jansje Jantina (1925-2019). In addition to his work, Anko is very active in the Reformed Church (Westerkerk Kraneweg, Groningen), where he is an elder. Church Primary has his heart. He gives lectures on many subjects, including one for the Reformed Youth Center, in which he takes a clear stand against the labor service and National Socialism. Anko saw the danger of this early on. Notes from that last lecture are found by the SD and lead to the capture of Anko (September 8, 1942). After three weeks at the police station, he first goes to the Detention House, then to Kamp Amersfoort (20 November 1942). He was eventually deported to Camp Sachsenhausen in Oranienburg where he died of exhaustion on January 6, 1943.
