On September 24, 1940, Ilse Karlsberg was arrested, deported via Hamburg to Theresienstadt and ultimately murdered in Auschwitz. Bernhard Karlsberg and their three children Rahel, Ruth and Walter survived. Ilse Karlsberg was born as Ilse Mathilde Heilbron on September 30, 1900 in Hamburg. Her parents were Simon and Franziska Heilbron, née Fröhlich, and the family lived in Hansastraße 63. Ilse Heilbron had two younger siblings, Martin Philipp and Alice, born in 1903 and 1907. She attended the "Staatslyceum in Hansastraße in Hamburg . In 1922 Ilse Heilbron married Bernhard Karlsberg, daughter Rahel was born on July 17, 1923, daughter Ruth was born on May 8, 1925 and son Walter on December 23, 1926. Source: https://www.stolpersteine-hamburg.de Carolien Isabel (Carry) van Dam was the youngest daughter of the Amsterdam butcher Salomon van Dam and Sophie Souweine. She had an older sister, Edmée, who worked as an executive secretary in The Hague. In 1926 Carry passed her final exams HBS-B. Four years later she married her former classmate Wim Happé. He worked in his family business for Chocolate and Confectionery in Amsterdam, which he took over from his father in 1930. They went to live in Heemstede, where their son Erik was born on April 22, 1931. Their son Wouter was born on August 22, 1934, and later that year they moved to Haarlem. In 1942, Carry and Wim were forced to move to Amsterdam due to anti-Jewish measures and Erik and Wouter were placed with other families. In September 1943 the family was reunited in a vacant house in Amsterdam. In mid-September, Carry was arrested during a street check and was held captive in the Hollandsche Schouwburg for six weeks. She was deported to camp Vught around November 3, 1943. From Vught, Carry was transported directly to Auschwitz on November 15, 1943. Carry was murdered there on January 31, 1944 at the latest. Wim and their children survived the war and moved back to Haarlem. Her father and sister lived in hiding places and also survived the war. Her mother died at the end of 1941 from cancer.
