David Hagenaar, born in Amsterdam in 1902, came from a family of fruit traders. On 5 September 1934 he married Rachel Beetz, born in Amsterdam in 1905, who had been a shop assistant. Their only child, Meijer, was born on 25 April 1936. In October 1937 the family moved to Van Zeggelenstraat 136 in Haarlem. David sold fruit in the street. When Jews were no longer allowed to do their work, he became a cleaner at the building of the Jewish congregation on Lange Wijngaardstraat in 1942.
Just before Christmas 1942 the family had to leave the house and move in with a family at Zijlweg 31. In February 1943 all Jews of Haarlem had to leave for Amsterdam. David, Rachel and Meijer were arrested there in April. They arrived in Westerbork on 13 April and were deported to Sobibor on 20 April. They were murdered there on 23 April 1943, two days before Meijer's seventh birthday. David was 40 and Rachel 38.
