Meijer Duis owned a recognized plumbing company in Amsterdam and was a qualified and recognized electrician. From the 1920s to around 1935 he had a business in sanitary and electric articles on Weesperstraat 1, on the corner with the Herengracht. Meijer Duis was an avid sport fisherman, loved the outdoors and turned out to be a deserving amateur art painter in his last years. In January 1943, Meijer Duis barely dismissed an arrest by the SD. In his spare time he made beautiful metal jewelry and art objects, which he then gave away. One day Meijer Duis was recognized as a Jew by a passer -by on the street and indicated by a passing police officer. He then handed him over to the Sicherheitspolizei. Due to his arrest, the place of residence of his wife Elisabeth Duis-Hammel was also known. Both have been deported. Meijer Duis was probably killed in a labor camp in Poland. Elisabeth Hammel (nickname Lies) was an intelligent woman with a special appearance. As the eldest child of a family with six children, she also took care of her younger sisters and brothers (who died one after all) at a young age. The children considered her a second mother. She provided her maintenance by working for a ladies' hat studio. Shortly before her arrest in November 1943, Elisabeth Hammel traveled to Wilnis a few times to bring her youngest child boning cards. The child worked there with a false identity card in a family. On November 4, 1943, someone from the Sicherheitspolizei had come behind the shelter of Elisabeth by betrayal. However, he gave her a respite for a few days to get ready for the retreat. She did not use that offered opportunity to flee. Her husband was arrested shortly before. Elisabeth Hammel decided to follow him. Frederika Duis (nickname Freddy) was a branch holder of a textile store of the company suddenly in Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam.
