Tweede Spoorstraat 1 Groningen
After his marriage to Geessien Kampstra from Eelde, Jan moved to the Friesestraatweg, now called Tweede Spoorstraat. Jan works as a house painter on various projects in the city and is politically very active. He is a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands, the CPN. Jan was convicted in the late 1930s for recruiting fighters for the International Brigade fighting against Franco's nationalists in Spain. He is also closely involved with the emigration group Red Aid and he becomes the propaganda leader for his party in Groningen. In the autumn of 1940, Jan Alberts became involved in the distribution of the illegal, communist newspaper "Het Noorderlicht", which is partly controlled by the central CPN leadership. Not much later, he becomes the leading figure for the CPN in city and province. As co-author of the pamphlet “Aan het werkvolk van Groningen”, which appeared immediately after the February strike of 1941, he had to leave his home on the Friesestraatweg and went into hiding in Orvelte, Musselkanaal and Gasselternijveen. On March 9, 1941, Jan Alberts is arrested by the SD in Harpel, near Vlagtwedde. Jan is transferred to the Scholtenshuis and the House of Detention in Groningen and from there deported via Camp Amersfoort to Buchenwald concentration camp. There he meets his brothers Fedde and Hilbrand; it is then April 2, 1942. Like many politically active resistance members, Jan Alberts is subsequently imprisoned in the Natzweiler concentration camp, where he manages to survive until the next transport – under pressure from the advancing Allies – takes him to Dachau. Alberts manages to survive in this concentration camp too, and a very exhausting transport – again under pressure from the Allied troops – lands him on 22 October 1944 in Neuengamme concentration camp, now the fifth concentration camp that he manages to survive. At the beginning of May 1945, Jan Alberts, together with thousands of other prisoners, is transferred to the ship Cap Arcona by the Nazis, who want to destroy all evidence for the existence of the concentration camp. On May 3, 1945, the ship, which is moored in the Lübecker Bight, is bombed by the Allies. Jan Stoffer Alberts is killed in this mistaken bombing.
