Alfred Guttmann was born on 21 February 1931 in Duisburg. After his mother died and his father, a Jewish metal trader, died from the effects of imprisonment in Dachau after Kristallnacht, Alfred and his brother Walter were sent to the Netherlands by Kindertransport in 1939. Alfred lived in Rotterdam and then with foster families in Haarlem, including at Kinderhuissingel 88. He attended school in Haarlem, but in 1942 had to leave the coastal area like other German Jewish children. After stays in Amsterdam, he was arrested during the major raid of 20 June 1943 and taken to Westerbork. On 7 September 1943 he was deported with other orphaned children to Auschwitz, where he was murdered on arrival, 10 September 1943. He was 12 years old.
