Anreperstraat 107 Assen
Cornelis (Cees) Hakkert, born April 28, 1911 in Schiedam, just had no liberation. He died shortly before in Sandbostel (north of Bremen), an outer camp of Neuengamme. Eventful war years preceded his death. Cornelis Hakkert was a committee in the population department at the Asser town hall on the Brink. He belonged to the LO Assen. For that organization he stole identity cards and turned them into fakes for people in hiding. In the spring of 1944, he cooperated in a raid on the town hall by the KP Noord-Drenthe, the first action of this resistance group led by the teacher Simon Schoon from Vries. Hakkert provided Schoon with information about the layout of the building, where the key strokes, the blank identity cards and the population register. Janny Keun from Alteveerstraat, a niece of Schoon, also provided information. The robbery took place on May 23, 1944 by four KPs who had left Vries. The action went smoothly. The secretary staff still present, including Hakkert, were locked up in the basement vault. The KPs put as many identity cards, stamps and cards in their bags as possible. The loot was brought to the Bulthuis family in the Kloosterstraat. Bé van der Schaaf, who was part of the leadership of the Asser LO and who had prepared the robbery with Schoon, hid the material in the Asserbos. He used buses for this, but they were never found after the war. The imprisoned officials called for help, including Hakkert, but the alarm was only raised after an hour when the other personnel arrived. The German SD immediately took action and arrested the detained officials Hakkert and E. (Eef) de Roo. Their boss E. Bos was also arrested and interrogated. Just like Janny Keun who was released after a few days. The other three were also released after fourteen days. Seven months later, on December 2, 1944, Hakkert and De Roo were arrested again. Despite the fact that they continued to deny and there was no evidence against them, the two ended up in the cell of the Asser House of Detention with Reverend Geertsema from Dwingeloo. On 11 December 1944, the attack on the Asser Huis van Bewaring took place. The cell of Geertsema, Hakkert and De Roo was also opened, but they did not want to go because they thought that going for them and their families was more dangerous than staying put. Innocent De Roo was later released but Geertsema and Hakkert were transported to Neuengamme on January 16, 1945. Cornelis Hakkert was then taken to Sandbostel. On April 24, 1945, his life ended at the age of 34. A few days later the camp was liberated by the English. Cornelis Hakkert is interred at the Krieggräberstätte Sandbostel. Hakkert lived with wife L. Schilperoord and daughter at 107 Anreperstraat. The name of Cornelis Hakkert is on the plaque of the Rijks HBS in Assen and on that of the football club Achilles of which he was a member until his death. Source: Maria Hakkert
