Brinkstraat 15

Aron van Gelder married in 1906 to Rozali Stofkooper, born in Lonneker. Aron is a musician and merchant and lives during the war on Brinkstraat (now number 15), they previously lived on Klippenweg. Earlier they also lived in Germany, where their sons Alfred (1907) and Iwan (1910) were born. The other children are born in Borne: Frits (1913), Cientje Anna (1920), Karel (1922) and Jacob (1924), one other son dies young.

Aron plays as a violinist in Borne's string and the harpe Davids. Not only father Aron is musical, it is also his children. Together they play in Van Gelder's Jazzband: the Gaiety Hoppers. Aron plays the violin there, and the sons Alfred, Iwan and Frits, respectively, viola, cello and percussion.

Son Iwan married Elisabeth Schoenmaker from Bergh, who is a Christian. He and his wife move to Almelo in 1934, where their son Aron (1934) was born and in 1943 their daughter Hetty. He survives the war because he manages to go into hiding in Brabant, his wife and children continue to live in Almelo.

Cientje Anna, the only daughter, also survives the war. At the time of deportation she stays in the hospital for eye surgery and the nurses of the RK hospital protect her. Later she went into hiding in Hengelo.

Alfred and his brothers Frits, Karel and Jacob still live with their parents during the war.

The history of this family shows how Jewish families were often torn apart during the war. Karel and Frits were arrested at the end of August 1942 to work in the labor camp in Kesteren. From there, Karel is deported to Central Europe on October 16 and Frits goes to Auschwitz three days later. Charles lived until March 1944, more than a year longer than Frits. Their parents and sons Alfred and Jacob are taken to Vught in April 1943 and from there to Westerbork. The parents are gassed in Sobibor, while Alfred and Jacob go to Auschwitz. Alfred is deported in September and killed immediately upon arrival, while Jacob is transported in November and has to work in Poland for several months. Jacob is 19 years old when he dies.

Karel marries Berni Winter, daughter of a cigar maker from Enschede, in camp Westerbork in 1942.
